Traveling every weekend was one of my favorite parts of the experience.

Costa Rica has so much to offer and is easy and inexpensive to get around. I am studying elementary education in the States and decided to volunteer teaching English in an elementary school in San Ramon. I hadn't taken Spanish in a few years and decided to do the language program for two weeks prior to my volunteer project. The staff at the language school was so great welcoming and helped me to adjust to a new country. I also met a few friends at the school who were traveling to San Ramon with me which was nice.

We were dropped off at our host families and met up for a tour of the town the following day. I loved San Ramon. The town is quant and beautiful, set in the hills of coffee plantations. The weather is perfect, cooler than most of Costa Rica. There’s a huge church and park in the middle of town where I would meet Lindsey and Christina every day after school to eat chocolate covered bananas. I was in San Ramon for 2 months and became very attached to the town and my students.

Teaching classes helped me to become a part of the community and it felt great having my students come up to me and say hello while I walked around town. I worked four hours a day at the school Monday through Thursday, which allowed afternoons free and the weekends to travel.

Traveling every weekend was one of my favorite parts of the experience. Costa Rica has so much to offer and is easy and inexpensive to get around. I traveled with the other volunteers and made lifelong friends.

Fiorella and the other coordinators were always in town, ready to help us when we had questions or needed advice. I went everywhere from the beaches to the rainforest, but by the end of the weekend we were always so excited to go back ‘home’ to San Ramon.

Having such a good support system kept me from being homesick while I was away for so long. uVolunteer was a great experience and I am already looking into doing another volunteer program with Christina and Lindsey through this organization- but in a different country!

At the end of my program, I left this report for uVolunteer. I hope it helps future volunteers have a good understanding of the uVolunteer program. I've also allowed uVolunteer to give out my email address to those interested in asking me questions about my trip and the uVolunteer program.
